SUMMARY:2025 ACRS Walk for Rice
DESCRIPTION:We’re proud to perform in support ACRS’ mission and vision. \nSKT Performances\n09:15am: Start of the event \n10:30am: Send off the Walkers \n11:15am: Celebrate the Walkers return \n  \nWalking to End Hunger\, One Grain at a Time\nFor over 30 years\, Walk for Rice has brought people together to raise funds for the ACRS Food Bank and nutrition programs while raising awareness about food insecurity in Asian and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander communities. The campaign kicks off in the spring and concludes with a multicultural community celebration and three-mile walk at Seward Park in June. \nAsian and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander communities are diverse and growing\, yet many face barriers to securing food\, emergency meals\, and other basic necessities. The ACRS Food Bank ensures those experiencing food insecurity can receive culturally familiar items like rice\, tofu\, dry noodles\, and fresh produce such as bok choy. Each year\, the Food Bank distributes around one million pounds of food to around 5\,000 people\, the majority seniors and children. \nSince the first walk in 1990 by co-founders Sam Mitsui and Herb and Bertha Tsuchiya\, Walk for Rice has grown from 45 walkers to hundreds of participants each year\, raising more than $4 million to fight hunger in our region. Join the community and Walk for Rice! \nWalk for Rice Website

SUMMARY:Kelly Goto with Lori Matsukawa
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that there was a successful comic based right here in Seattle? Between 2012 and 2018\, artist Sam Goto drew over 250 multi-paneled comic strips called Seattle Tomodachi (“friend of Seattle”) for The North American Post. Seattle Tomodachi chronicled the lives and stories of early Japanese settlers and their Japanese-American children and other descendants. From immigration\, mass removal and incarceration\, to the rebuilding of social connections\, Goto sought to portray the memories and experiences of the Japanese community. Through his work\, he captured elements of culture\, nostalgia\, and history\, while infusing his characters with the samurai values of courage\, respect\, compassion\, and improvement. \nGoto’s daughter Kelly reflects on her late father’s legacy as she revives his work in the collection Seattle Samurai: A Cartoonist’s Perspective of the Japanese American Experience. Kelly Goto blends her text with photos and memorabilia that help contextualize her father’s work and anchor its place in Seattle’s cultural history.

SUMMARY:Walk for Rice
DESCRIPTION:Join SKT as we kick off Walk for Rice 2024!!! \n  \nFor generations\, Walk for Rice brings people and communities together to raise funds for the ACRS Food Bank in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District and nutrition program and awareness about food insecurity in Asian and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (ANHPI) communities. The fundraising campaign kicks off in the spring and culminates in a multicultural community celebration and three-mile walk at Seward Park in June. \nANHPI communities are a diverse and growing population\, and many disproportionately lack access to food\, emergency meals and other basic needs. The ACRS Food Bank ensures community members experiencing food scarcity have access to culturally familiar foods\, such as rice\, tofu\, dry noodles and fresh produce like bok choi. In 2023\, the ACRS Food Bank distributed over a million pounds of food and reached more than 5\,000 people\, many of them seniors and children. \nSince the first walk in 1990 with co-founders Sam Mitsui and Herb and Bertha Tsuchiya\, Walk for Rice has grown from 45 walkers to hundreds of participants each year and has raised more than $4 million to feed families and individuals experiencing hunger in our region. Join the community and Walk for Rice!
